KATHMANDU: UML Secretary Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai has urged all stakeholders to resolve the ongoing dispute surrounding the construction of the Pathibhara cable car in Taplejung through dialogue.
His remarks come in the wake of a violent clash between protesters and police on January 25, which left over 24 people injured.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Bhattarai, who also represents Taplejung in the House of Representatives, emphasized the need for social harmony while making public his 19-point stance on the under-construction Pathibhara Devi (Mukkumlung ) cable car. He asserted that no activity should be undertaken that could disturb social cohesion.
“Pathibhara, being geographically remote, should be easily accessible. The cable car is a suitable option, especially for the elderly, children, and people with disabilities,” he said. “With the cable car, it is estimated that up to one million pilgrims and tourists will visit Pathibhara annually, boosting employment, income, local product marketing, and the overall prosperity of Taplejung.”
Bhattarai noted that multiple discussions, including those involving the Chief District Officer, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Phungling Municipality, have taken place to address concerns related to the project.
He also refuted claims that the cable car would harm religious and cultural values, stating that the station is planned about 800 meters away from the main temple, with no hotels or restaurants to be built at the summit.
He further clarified misconceptions regarding environmental concerns, stating that only 2,112 trees and poles would be cut down, not 25,000 as rumored.
Expressing regret over the recent clashes, Bhattarai wished a speedy recovery to the injured police officers and civilians. He called on the government to ensure proper medical treatment for them while urging all parties to work towards an amicable resolution.
Bhattarai also suggested that the construction company contribute a social responsibility fund and that the government allocate additional resources for the development of Mukkumlung Park and Museum to promote local culture and heritage.
