Election Commission to initiate short-term voter enrollment program

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) is set to launch temporary voter registration ahead of the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) elections for voting under the proportional representation system.

The Commission has approved the program in accordance with Section 30 of the Voter Registration Act, 2073, and the Temporary Voter Registration Procedure, 2082. According to Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, details of voters to be included in the temporary registration must be certified by the head of the relevant office between January 3, 2026 and February 1, 2026 and submitted to the office of the Chief Name Registration Officer or the Provincial or District Election Officer.

Following this, the compiled voter registration list will be published, and the final temporary voter registration list will be released after examining claims and objections.

The Commission stated that the registration will cover employees of government-owned or controlled organizations, provincial and local bodies, personnel of the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force in barracks, detainees and prisoners, senior citizens, and office-bearers of constitutional bodies operated or approved by the Government of Nepal, provincial governments, or local levels.
