Children and elderly affected by increasing cold

GAIGHAT: With the onset of a cold wave, children and elderly residents of Triyuga Municipality in Udaypur district have been severely affected by the extreme cold.

Devlal Chaudhary, a local resident of Laxmipur, said that elderly people and children in areas including Jogidaha, Mothhai, Bagaha, Gaighat, and Laxmipur are facing difficulties. Krishnadev Chaudhary of Jogidaha Hadkhola said the cold wave has continued for the past three days, forcing elderly villagers to remain indoors to keep warm.

“Due to the persistent cold, the elderly have not been able to go outside and have been confined to their homes,” he said, adding that the cold has also affected daily activities such as cutting grass in fields and forests, leading to a shortage of fodder for cattle. Ramkrishna Rajdhami of Mothhai said that young children have been unable to attend school because of the cold.

According to Samjhana Acharya, a teacher at Satyadevi Secondary School in Bhulke, attendance among students below Grade 5 has declined as temperatures have dropped. Similarly, Krishna Danuwar, a teacher at Janata Basic School in Asari, said students in Grades 1, 2, and 3 have stopped attending classes due to the cold.

The cold weather has also reduced people’s movement, and activities such as collecting firewood from forests have been disrupted. Ramesh Karki, a resident of Triyuga Municipality–2, Khaijanpur, complained that continuous cloud cover has prevented the sun from appearing.
