Bharatpur Metropolitan City expands smart toilet facilities

CHITWAN: Bharatpur Metropolitan City has launched a campaign to construct smart toilets in urban areas. Construction of modern smart toilets has reached its final stage at two locations, while two other facilities are already operational.

Santosh Acharya, Divisional Engineer of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, said that the campaign is currently focused near the metropolitan office, where work on the toilets has reached its final stage.

“The toilets have been constructed on land near the neighboring District Police Office facing the road. Both projects are nearly complete and were built at a cost of Rs 10 million,” he said.

According to Acharya, the toilet near the metropolitan office features a modern design inspired by Tharu culture, while the one near the police office has a contemporary design. Both facilities are equipped with identical amenities, including disabled-friendly access, breastfeeding spaces, hand dryers, and sanitary pad-changing stations for women.

Additionally, sensor-equipped taps have been installed, and the toilets are designed to accommodate both men and women.

Earlier, the Bharatpur Metropolitan City built modern public toilets in front of Bharatpur Hospital, Gondrang, and Aanpatari at a cost of Rs 7 million. Mayor Renu Dahal said that limited space has prevented the construction of more smart toilets in urban areas, but the metropolis is committed to completing the project in a timely manner.

She added that the Metropolitan City is currently searching for suitable land to install smart toilets in key market areas, including Lions Chowk, Shahid Chowk, and Pulchowk.
