PM Sushila Karki urges UML to actively participate in March 5 elections

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has urged leaders of the CPN-UML to actively take part in the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

During a meeting with UML leaders at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Thursday, PM Karki said the government is committed to holding the elections on the announced date and called on the UML to participate fully in the process.

According to UML leader Mahesh Bartaula, the party informed the Prime Minister that it is prepared to contest the elections once a conducive environment is ensured. He said the UML, which has long struggled to uphold democratic norms and values, has never objected to facing public scrutiny through elections.

Bartuala added that the party expects the government to take security and other election-related concerns seriously. He also noted that key political matters, including the issue of parliamentary reinstatement, would be resolved once the Supreme Court concludes its constitutional review.

Following the discussion, Minister for Information and Communications Technology Jagadish Kharel said the Prime Minister made a formal request for UML’s participation in the elections. UML leaders, he added, assured the government that they would not shy away from the polls and would take part if a fair and impartial environment is guaranteed.

According to Kharel, several doubts surrounding the election process were significantly reduced after the interaction with UML leaders.

The UML delegation at the meeting included General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali, and youth leader Mahesh Bartaula.
