Season’s first snowfall hits Mustang, travel above Kagbeni discouraged

MUSTANG: The Himalayan district of Mustang witnessed this season’s first snowfall on Tuesday morning, affecting normal life in the upper region.

According to the District Administration Office, snowfall began early today in Korala, Lomanthang, and Muktinath areas, accompanied by light rain in lower Mustang.

Chief District Officer Bishnu Prasad Bhusal said heavy snow has blanketed Chhoser of Lomanthang-2, Korala, and Muktinath, while light rain mixed with snow was recorded in the lower valleys.

Rabin Subedi of the Muktinath Development Committee said five to six inches of snow have already accumulated around the Muktinath temple, making travel for pilgrims difficult.

Similarly, snowfall was also reported in Lo-Ghekar Damodarkunda, Khhinga, Jhung, Chhengur, and Phalyak of the Waragung Muktikshetra area. Ward Chair Pramesh Gurung said the snowfall, though increasing the cold, is expected to benefit apple and cereal crops by helping retain soil moisture.

Meanwhile, the District Administration Office has urged travelers not to venture above Kagbeni toward Muktinath due to slippery roads and the risk of accidents.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Chhiring Kippa Lama said the roads in Kalobhir, Khhinga, and Jharikot areas are covered in thick snow, and vehicles have been advised not to travel on the Jomsom–Muktinath section until conditions improve.
