Scrap dealers continue protest against KMC despite rain

KATHMANDU: Scrap dealers continued their protest for the third consecutive day on Thursday, rallying to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) office in the rain while chanting slogans against Mayor Balen Shah.

The rally began from Bhrikutimandap and concluded at KMC’s Kamaladi office. Many demonstrators carried the national flag during the march.

Protesters accused Mayor Shah of defying a Supreme Court order and harassing scrap business operators. They demanded the implementation of court rulings and the assurance of a peaceful environment to continue their businesses.

Chanting slogans such as “Respect the Supreme Court’s order” and “Stop Balen’s hooliganism and violence”, the protesters warned their movement would continue until their demands are met.

KMC has been attempting to relocate scrap storage and processing industries from urban areas, while dealers have resisted. On August 22, the Patan High Court issued an interim order directing KMC not to remove scrap businesses immediately.
