Nepali Congress launches national debate on AI for development

KATHMANDU: As Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshapes global discourse, the Nepali Congress (NC) has stepped forward to initiate a structured debate on how Nepal can harness AI for national development.

On Sunday, the party launched a discussion series titled “AI: Overall Analysis for Nepal’s Development” at its central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur.

NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, addressing the event, said AI presents unprecedented opportunities for development if used wisely. He highlighted the party’s commitment to building a ‘Digital Nepal’ centered on innovation, good governance, and citizen empowerment.

The programme was organized by the NC’s Department of Science and Information Technology. Department Coordinator Sushila Mishra Bhatta said AI could become a trustworthy partner in Nepal’s development but cautioned that its adoption must be strategic and mindful of emerging risks.

Suresh Pokharel, Vice Chairperson of AI Association Nepal, called for an evidence-based approach to AI adoption, urging stakeholders not to be held back by fear. Drawing historical parallels to skepticism around electricity, he stressed that Nepal can build its own AI framework by investing in infrastructure, data systems, human capital, and robust policy.

The event featured a short video tracing Nepal’s digital development journey, followed by a panel discussion on the country’s AI readiness. Panelists included ride-sharing app Tootle founder Shikshit Bhatta, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology Adesh Khadka, Professor Dr. Sudan Jha, E-Governance Commission CEO Dipesh Bista, and data governance expert Sajana Maharjan.

The speakers stressed that AI should be seen not just as a tool but as a transformative force, requiring long-term vision and political commitment. Chairing the session, NC central member Dr. Minendra Rijal said AI deployment must go hand-in-hand with inclusive, accountable leadership.

The participants collectively urged the NC to lead policy efforts that ensure AI is harnessed to benefit the wider population, positioning Nepal for a future shaped by digital innovation.
