Nepali Army distributes drinking water in Birgunj amid shortage

BIRGUNJ: In response to a severe drinking water shortage in Birgunj Metropolitan City and across Parsa district, the Nepali Army’s Shree Jung Battalion has been distributing an average of 100,000 liters of water daily via tankers.

The battalion, in coordination with the Madhesh Province Government, has been delivering water three times a day to affected settlements. Lt. Gen. Lokendra Karki, commander of the Shree Jung Battalion, said six tankers are being deployed daily to distribute water in various wards of Birgunj and surrounding municipalities.

“We are targeting the general public facing an acute shortage of water, distributing tanker supplies three times a day,” said Karki. “The operation spans multiple wards within the metropolis and extends to other municipalities in the district.”

The water distribution effort involves collaboration between the Madhesh Province Government, District Disaster Management Committee, local governments, the Birgunj branch of the Drinking Water Corporation, and the Nepali Army.

Chief District Officer of Parsa, Ganesh Aryal, stated that the initiative has brought considerable relief. “Residents from various wards contact us throughout the day, and we’ve been responding based on urgency,” he noted.

Water distribution via tankers began on July 17, with the District Administration Office stepping in from July 21 to cover areas with the most critical need.

Currently, tankers are delivering water to locations including Chhapakaiya and Gayatri Tole (Ward 1), Radhemai and Shreepur (Ward 11), Bahuari Chowk (Ward 14), Bhishwa and Radheradhe Colony (Ward 15), Ramgadhawa (Ward 24), Sugauli Birta (Ward 26), and Husan Jahan Chowk.

Additionally, in Bahudarmai Municipality-1 Bishrampur and Dakshin Tole of Parsa, water is being distributed daily at 7:00 am, 2:00 pm, and 6:00 pm.

CDO Aryal confirmed that the tanker distribution will continue until the water crisis subsides.
