Mohammad Aftab Alam released from prison

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam has been released from Nakkhu Jail after being acquitted by the High Court in a high-profile murder case dating back to 2008.

Alam, who had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Rautahat District Court, was accused of burning people alive in a brick kiln to destroy evidence related to an election-time bomb blast.

The incident had shocked the nation and became one of the most controversial criminal cases involving a sitting lawmaker.

However, the High Court overturned the lower court’s verdict, stating that the charges against Alam could not be substantiated due to a lack of sufficient evidence. The court ruled that the alleged incident itself could not be confirmed during the proceedings.
