HoR to convene after delays as parties agree to air views

KATHMANDU: After multiple delays and a prolonged deadlock between ruling and opposition parties, the House of Representatives is finally set to convene on Wednesday afternoon.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 11:00 am, had been postponed as disagreement over Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak’s position stalled proceedings.

Despite opposition demands for Lekhak’s resignation over the controversial visit visa scandal, no consensus was reached during several rounds of inter-party talks. However, lawmakers from all parties have now agreed to allow Wednesday’s session to proceed, where each party will be given an opportunity to present their views in Parliament.

According to Rastriya Prajatantra Party’s chief whip Gyan Bahadur Shahi, the agreement allows for an open discussion in the House without immediately resolving the key demands.

“We are still calling for answers from both Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli regarding the visit visa case,” said Shahi. “But for now, all parties will be allowed to express their positions, and further steps will be discussed later.”

Tuesday’s Parliament session was repeatedly postponed after opposition parties, including the Rastriya Swatantra Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, staged protests demanding Lekhak’s resignation and the formation of a high-level investigation committee.

The disruption led Speaker Devraj Ghimire to adjourn the session several times, eventually pushing the meeting to Wednesday.

Earlier efforts by the Speaker to mediate a consensus failed as the opposition parties remained firm in their stance, refusing to let Parliament proceed until their demands were met.
