Over 400 climbers obtain permits for Mt. Everest ascent this spring

KATHMANDU: A total of 402 climbers from 53 countries have secured permits to climb Mt. Everest, the world’s highest peak, as of April 27 for this spring’s climbing season, according to the Department of Tourism. Among them, 74 are women.

Department Director Liladhar Awasthi stated that 41 expeditions have received permits this season.

In the same period last year, 414 climbers, including 75 women and 339 men from 41 expeditions, obtained permits to climb Everest.

A total of Rs 684 million in royalty has been collected from permits issued for climbing various peaks this year. The Department anticipates that the royalty amount will increase as more climbers arrive.

To ensure safe and orderly climbs, the Department has set up a field office at the Everest Base Camp to oversee and regulate mountaineering activities.

In the 72 years of Everest climbs, many new records have been set, with a growing number of climbers vying to reach the summit of the world’s tallest mountain.

Despite the risks and challenges associated with climbing Everest, the number of climbers continues to rise.

Among them is Tashi Gyaljen Sherpa from Solukhumbu, who is attempting to set a new record by climbing Everest four times in 20 days this season.

So far, more than 8,000 climbers, both domestic and international, have reached the summit, and the trend of breaking new records continues.
