Durga Prasai’s attempt to run over security personnel escalated violence: Home Ministry

KATHMANDU: The government has concluded that Friday’s situation worsened after Durga Prasai, the ‘commander’ of the pro-monarchy agitation, drove a vehicle with the intent to kill security personnel.

This was announced at a press conference by the Home Ministry following a meeting of security chiefs.

The Home Ministry condemned the demonstration as violent and regrettable.

Joint Secretary Chhabi Rijal stated that during the protest led by Prasai in Tinkune, public and private property, including a hospital, were vandalized and set on fire.

“A violent demonstration took place in Tinkune. The actions of the former king’s supporters were deeply regrettable. The constitutional freedoms were misused in a shameful manner,” he stated.

“The situation deteriorated when Prasai drove a vehicle intending to harm security personnel. Incidents of vandalism, arson, and even setting houses on fire with people inside have been reported,” Rijal said.

The ministry also confirmed the death of 29-year-old Sabin Maharjan, a resident of Kirtipur-4.

Additionally, eight vehicles were set ablaze at Jadibuti Factory.
