Police restricting royalist supporters to Tinkune, fire tear gas

KATHMANDU: Tensions flared in Tinkune as police imposed restrictions on royalist supporters, confining them to the area and firing tear gas after the group attempted to move beyond the designated protest area.

The protest, organized by the Joint People’s Movement Committee, which aims to restore the monarchy, had been granted permission to gather at Tinkune. However, as royalist supporters tried to march towards New Baneshwor, authorities intervened, citing security concerns.

Eyewitnesses reported that the police fired dozens of tear gas shells to prevent the royalist group from advancing. The scuffle escalated when protestors attempted to move beyond the restricted area.

According to police officials, royalist supporters were only permitted to enter Tinkune via specific routes, including Chabahil, Gaushala, Airport, and Sinamangal. “No other routes will be allowed,” a Nepal Police spokesperson stated.

Leaders, including Monarchy Restoration Campaign Coordinator Nawaraj Subedi, had previously begun their march from Chabahil, but the disruption led to further delays. The protests were organized as part of the ongoing campaign to push for the restoration of the monarchy in Nepal.
