Police submit report on Siraha Dalit family’s house demolition to govt attorney

SIRAHA: The Nepal Police have submitted their investigation report to the District Government Attorney’s Office regarding the demolition of a Dalit family’s house in Aurahi Rural Municipality-5, Siraha.

The house of Dipak Malik, a member of the Dom community, was demolished to make way for the Bishnu Mahayagya, a religious event set to begin on March 30.

The incident, which occurred on February 22, has been widely condemned as an act of caste-based discrimination.

District Government Attorney Rajendra Basnet confirmed receiving the report and stated that cases would be filed in court after a thorough review. The police completed their investigation within six days, focusing on caste-based discrimination and untouchability offences.

According to media reports, Bajrangi Baba, the religious leader overseeing the Mahayagya, insisted that the event could not proceed with the Dalit family residing at the site. This led to the demolition of Malik’s house, allegedly with the involvement of Rural Municipality Chairman Shivaji Yadav and former ward chair Dilip Yadav.

The displacement of Malik’s family has sparked outrage among various organizations, which have strongly condemned the act as a blatant violation of Dalit rights and an example of deep-rooted caste discrimination.
