POKHARA: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa has expressed concerns over the growing public disappointment due to the government’s failure to deliver results, despite holding a two-thirds majority in parliament.
Thapa made these remarks during an interaction session at the ongoing Nepal Literature Festival in Pokhara on Friday.
Speaking about the increasing disillusionment in society and the rising anarchy on the streets, Thapa pointed out that the government’s lack of action and results was the root cause of the widespread dissatisfaction.
He stated that the current government, which is formed by the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, has not been able to address the issues facing society because it has failed to focus on being result-oriented.
“The government seems to have a false sense of security, relying on its two-thirds majority and ignoring the urgency of the situation,” he said.
“To overcome the growing disappointment, the government should have focused on action and results, but instead, it appears more concerned with political numbers than delivering outcomes.”
During the ‘Disappointment: Explanation and Reality’ session at the festival, Thapa also acknowledged his responsibility, even though he is not directly involved in the government.
“While I am questioning the government’s failures, I cannot run away from the shortcomings of the administration,” he said. “I bear the blame for the current situation, and I will not shy away from it.”
Thapa also addressed the public’s growing dissatisfaction with the provincial structure and the government’s handling of federalism.
He commented that despite the difficulties of establishing federalism, provinces have not been sufficiently empowered.
“After introducing federalism with so much effort, the provinces have not been strengthened as they should have been,” Thapa remarked.
“There is a lack of rights for the provinces, and we are now witnessing growing discontent toward them.”
He added that the government should work towards improving the political system, where no single party can secure a majority.
“We need to ensure that provinces are given the rights they deserve, and stop trying to make them the ‘scapegoats’ for the country’s problems,” Thapa stated.
