KATHMANDU: A persistent cold wave, accompanied by thick fog, has severely disrupted daily life in the eastern Tarai districts and other parts of the country.

According to the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the cold wave is intensifying due to falling temperatures and persistent foggy conditions. The affected areas include districts in Koshi and Madhesh provinces, where the impact is felt most acutely.

The cold wave has significantly affected vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, laborers, and those with limited access to resources. Sundarharaincha Senior Citizens Society President Ram Kumar Karki noted that morning commuters are particularly struggling.

Vice President of Koshi Province PABSON, Arjun Basnet, emphasized that school children are also facing difficulties due to the harsh weather.

The cold has also taken a toll on local businesses. Sundarharaincha Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Narayan Karki reported that markets are becoming deserted by early evening as people avoid venturing out in the biting cold. Meanwhile, shops selling warm clothing are seeing an increase in customers, as residents prepare to combat the chill.

In response to the extreme cold, some locals are resorting to burning firewood and logs for warmth. Driver Saroj Lamichhane expressed concerns about driving conditions, citing poor visibility caused by dense fog.

Health workers in the region have reported an uptick in cold-related illnesses. The Eastern University Teaching Hospital, Gothgaun, has recorded an increase in cases of asthma, pneumonia, colds, and fever.

Chronic disease patients, including those with heart, lung, and diabetes conditions, are also seeking medical attention in larger numbers, according to district hospitals.

The cold wave has disrupted air travel, with the Civil Aviation Office at Biratnagar Airport reporting flight delays and cancellations due to poor visibility caused by thick fog.

As the cold wave continues to grip the region, residents are urging local authorities to implement relief measures to support vulnerable communities and address the rising health and logistical challenges.
