RSP and Balen near agreement, final decision expected today

KATHMANDU: Political negotiations between the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and a group aligned with Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah have reached a decisive stage, with leaders from both sides indicating that an understanding to move forward together is almost complete.

While discussions have produced broad agreement, the final decision is expected to be announced today (Saturday). A four-member negotiation committee comprising two representatives from each side held discussions on Friday and reached broad consensus on key proposals.

Sources said that both the sides have agreed in principle to move forward together. Both sides have refrained from disclosing detailed information about the issues on which they have agreed.

According to an RSP leader, proposals include appointing Mayor Shah as co-chairperson and prime ministerial candidate, as well as incorporating members of Mayor Shah’s faction into the party’s central committee.

Leaders said that once the negotiation committee reaches a final understanding, the agreement will be formalized following talks between RSP Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane and Balen Shah. A decision to officially move forward together is expected today.

Meanwhile, leaders close to Mayor Shah have also informed the Election Commission about the Desh Bikas Party, which had been registered with the election symbol of a stick. Balen Shah has reportedly told his close associates that he will leave the party and formally enter active politics.
