NC signature campaign questions leadership as internal uncertainty deepens

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress special general convention signature campaign has sharply questioned the party leadership, saying prolonged uncertainty and indecision have pushed the organization to a critical turning point.

Issuing a statement on Thursday, the campaign said the current central leadership must take responsibility for the state of the party’s internal life, the convention process, and adherence to the party statute.

According to the campaign, nearly 55 percent of general convention representatives have demanded a special general convention as per the party statute, yet the leadership continues to ignore their demand, prompting serious dissatisfaction within the party.

The statement further argues that the representatives’ initiatives have strictly remained within the boundaries of the statute, while accusing the leadership of refusing to fix a date for the regular convention, failing to address the demand for a special convention, and unnecessarily prolonging Central Committee meetings. These tendencies, the campaign said, amount to irresponsible behavior.

“We have not demanded a mere schedule; we have demanded a full general convention,” the statement reads. “We seek new policies and new leadership, not a repetition of pre-election power arrangements.”

The campaign also warned that no excuse or unreliable timeline for the regular convention can invalidate the statutory demand for a special general convention.

Raising direct questions for the leadership, the campaign asked whether the statute applies equally to everyone, and whether the interests of the party, democracy, and the country are above personal ambitions.

The campaign reiterated that the special general convention must be completed by Poush 28 as mandated by the statute, urging all sides to place the interests of the party and the nation above positions and power.
