Nepal defeats India on their home ground; Sabitra scores both goals

KATHMANDU: The Nepal women’s football team defeated India on Indian soil, winning 2–1 in Monday’s match. Both goals for Nepal were scored by team captain Sabitra Bhandari Samba.

Samba opened the scoring for Nepal in the 2nd minute at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong. Although opportunities were missed by Preeti Rai in the 22nd minute and Samba in the 43rd minute, she struck again in the 63rd minute to double Nepal’s lead. India managed to score a goal in the 81st minute, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

In the triangular tournament, Iran has already been crowned champion, having defeated Nepal 3–0 and India 2–0.

A year ago, Nepal had also beaten India in a thrilling semifinal at the SAFF Championship held in Kathmandu, winning via a tiebreaker.
