Seven-day deadline set for registration of social media platforms in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The government has announced a seven-day deadline for social media platforms to register in Nepal, warning of gradual restrictions for those failing to comply.

Government spokesperson Prithvi Subba Gurung said on Wednesday that the Cabinet meeting of August 25 decided to issue a public call for registration in line with the Social Media Directive, 2023, and a Supreme Court order. The move aims to ensure accountability and responsibility of social media operators in Nepal.

According to the decision, platforms that fail to register or even initiate contact within the given timeframe will be made inactive inside the country. Those completing the registration process may be reactivated upon approval through the Ministry of Communication and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.

The Cabinet also decided to classify 20 projects, including industrial estates, special economic zones, dry ports, petroleum pipelines, and privately operated cable cars, as projects of national priority.

In addition, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and its subordinate agencies have been approved to conduct an organizational and management survey.

On foreign affairs, spokesperson Gurung said Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will raise the issue of Lipulekh, reportedly used by India and China without Nepal’s consent, with both countries’ leaders. Oli is scheduled to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in China on August 31 and will hold sideline meetings with Indian and Chinese counterparts.
