UML central member Mahar arrested, presented to court for remand

KATHMANDU: The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police has taken into custody CPN-UML central committee member Ain Mahar.

A woman from Bajhang had filed a complaint through the post office, based on which the Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant on July 25, according to police.

Mahar appeared at the Cyber Bureau office in Bhotahiti on Wednesday, where he was taken into custody and presented to the court for extension of remand, Bureau spokesperson and Superintendent of Police (SP) Dipakraj Awasti told News Hub.

“A complaint had been lodged against him through the post. The Kathmandu District Court issued the arrest warrant on July 25,” SP Awasti said. “After he appeared at the Bureau, we took him into custody and presented him to the Kathmandu District Court for remand.”

The court will determine whether or not a case will be pursued. If it proceeds, Mahar will remain in custody for investigation, Awasti added.

Mahar, a resident of Bajhang, previously served as chair of the UML’s student wing ANNFSU and later became a central committee member. He contested the 2022 federal elections but was defeated by Unified Socialist leader Bhanu Bhakta Joshi.
