NRCS responds to cholera outbreak in Birgunj

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) has launched an emergency response to a cholera outbreak that has spread to the community level in Birgunj, Parsa.

The intervention, supported financially and technically by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ (IFRC) Disaster Response Emergency Fund, aims to prevent and contain the spread of the infection.

According to NRCS, specialized staff from IFRC and the NRCS Health Service Department have been mobilized to assist the Parsa District Chapter in preparing a response plan.

The first cases of cholera in Birgunj were reported around August 20, 2025. Since then, NRCS Parsa volunteers have been conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns, educating residents on hygiene practices and measures to avoid infection.

In support of treatment efforts, the NRCS has supplied more than 300 packets of oral rehydration solution (ORS) to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) under the Ministry of Health and Population, which will be distributed to hospitals treating cholera patients.

NRCS officials said they are closely coordinating with government authorities at all levels to help contain the outbreak. Meanwhile, the Parsa District Chapter is also implementing drought response activities with IFRC DREF support.
