NEA denies load shedding return, calls recent reports misleading

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has refuted claims that load shedding is making a comeback, stating that recent news reports and social media posts referring to an internal power management notice as a “load shedding schedule” are misleading and inappropriate.

In a press release issued Sunday, the NEA clarified that a notice published by the Chanauli Distribution Centre was meant solely for internal load management purposes for one day and not an indication of a nationwide power cut schedule.

“The confusion and public perception created by the publication of this technical notice as a ‘load shedding schedule’ by certain media outlets and social media platforms have drawn the serious attention of the Authority,” the statement said.

The NEA explained that due to lower-than-expected rainfall during the monsoon season, irrigation demand has surged, putting pressure on the electricity distribution system. To manage this increased irrigation load, the utility had to temporarily interrupt power supply in certain areas to allow for switching of lines and transformers, a routine technical operation.

“This was merely a timetable for brief power interruptions needed for transformer and line management, not a return to load shedding,” the statement clarified.

The authority further noted that the issue in the Chanauli distribution area was purely technical and would be resolved within two to three days.

The NEA urged the public and media to avoid spreading misinformation and to rely on official communications for accurate updates.
