BHOJPUR: With the goal of preserving, promoting, and passing on local culture, the youth of Bhojpur are actively working to continue original traditions, including the traditional ‘Laakhe Naach’ (dance). They are increasingly engaged in preserving customs, costumes, and cultural heritage.
Breaking the notion that ‘Laakhe Naach’belongs only to the Newar community, a campaign has been launched to preserve traditional customs with participation from all communities, said local youth leader Nabin Budhathoki. He shared that ‘Laakhe Naach’, which begins on Nag Panchami, will be organized district-wide.
Previously, this dance was performed mainly in areas inhabited by the Newar community. However, recently, with an emphasis on collective participation, it has expanded as part of efforts to preserve the tradition, Budhathoki added.
Youth member Bikal Shrestha, involved in preparations for the annual ‘Laakhe Naach’, said, “The youth should carry forward traditional culture, not only to pass it down through generations but also to help preserve and promote our heritage.” While ‘Laakhe Naach’ starts from Gathe Mangal in some areas, in Bhojpur it traditionally begins on Nag Panchami, he explained.
Local leader Kishor Shrestha noted that the preservation and promotion of this ancient culture has been initiated by the local youth. A program has also been organized this year to honor those who have contributed to preserving tradition and culture.
Shrestha described that ‘Laakhe Naach’ begins with worship at local monasteries and temples on Nag Panchami. During the festival, the tradition includes going around the market playing drums and cymbals, performing the ‘Thakathuke’ and ‘Ropain’ (paddy planting dance) dances, as well as various humorous acts and dances reflecting ethnic culture and tradition.
Youth are also receiving training to maintain these age-old cultural practices. Locals report that training covers musical rhythm, song melodies, and dance movements. They call on everyone to unite in promoting ‘Laakhe Naach’ while preserving Nepali art, culture, and tradition.
‘Laakhe Naach’ is performed at various locations in Bhojpur Municipality. The tradition is also alive in several wards of Purbi Arun Rural Municipality and Shadananda Municipality within the district.
