NC leader calls for action against exploitation of Japan-bound trainee workers

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress central member Ajay Babu Shiwakoti has strongly condemned what he called a “serious syndicate” exploiting Nepali youths aspiring to work in Japan under trainee worker schemes.

In a statement issued Friday morning via social media, Shiwakoti called for urgent action against those responsible, warning that the system is riddled with abuse and illegality.

He criticized the process where, even after trainees are issued Japanese visas, they are still required to take additional language tests, calling it both unlawful and inhumane.

“Once the Japanese side has accepted the trainee and issued a visa, halting them for another language test is nothing but a ploy to delay, confuse, and extort them financially,” he said.

Shiwakoti blamed the situation on a deeply entrenched 15-year-old network, allegedly operating for profit by selling the labor of aspiring migrants. He specifically pointed to the collaboration between JICA Alumna Association Nepal and the Department of Foreign Employment as an example of this flawed system, and demanded its immediate dismantling.

He likened the situation to the visit visa scandal and accused a handful of individuals and institutions of abusing the names of government bodies to exploit “innocent youths and the investments of their families.”

Calling for a demonstration of governance and transparency, Shiwakoti urged the Department of Foreign Employment to remove unauthorized institutions and agents from the labor migration process and to begin a thorough investigation and enforcement action.

“If we fail to respect the labor of our own youth,” Shiwakoti warned, “we lose the moral ground to even talk about solving unemployment inside the country.”
