RPP central member detained after filing complaint against PM KP Sharma Oli

KATHMANDU: A central member of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) ended up in police custody after filing a complaint against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at the Nepal Police Headquarters.

RPP central member Ravi Kiran Hamal was arrested after he lodged a complaint regarding PM Oli’s provocative remarks delivered at an orientation program for ward chairpersons organized by the CPN-UML Bagmati Province Committee on Sunday in Godawari.

A police team detained Hamal from Lazimpat, Kathmandu, at around 6 pm on Monday and took him into custody. He was released the following day, Tuesday, at 2 pm after being questioned.

“Nepal Police arrested me from Lazimpat and kept me at the Crime Investigation Office,” Hamal said. “When I asked the officer about the reason for my arrest, I was told it was based on orders from above — specifically from the Prime Minister’s Office.”

Hamal confirmed that he has now been released.

“Everything will come to light in due course. Tomorrow, this incident will be evaluated,” he said upon release. “May the country prosper, may the Nepali people thrive, may a political system suitable to Nepali soil prevail, and may Nepal become a developed nation within our lifetime. I remain committed to achieving the goal of enabling Nepalis to live as citizens of a developed nation.”

On Monday, Hamal had submitted an application to Inspector General of Police Deepak Thapa titled, “Immediately Arrest the Prime Minister.”

In his petition, Hamal referred to PM Oli’s statement made on Sunday in Godawari, which he described as inciting violence. “It is a serious issue that the Prime Minister, while holding such a high office, would make remarks that incite violence,” the complaint read. “It is well known that a people’s movement has been announced for May 29. Oli’s comments clearly indicate an intent to instigate large-scale violence and bloodshed on that day.”

Hamal accused Prime Minister Oli of deliberately plotting actions that disrupt peace and security, incite violence, and push the country toward conflict. He demanded a thorough investigation.

“I hereby request that he be immediately arrested and held in custody,” Hamal stated. “If Nepal Police ignores such matters, fails to take them seriously, or does not initiate action, the situation on May 29 could become extremely dire and tragic.”
