KATHMANDU: At the 25th anniversary celebration of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chair Top Bahadur Magar expressed concern over the lack of implementation of the commission’s recommendations, particularly those related to action against human rights violators.
He warned that failure to act on these recommendations could foster a culture of impunity.
Magar said the interdependence between freedom of expression and human rights, stressing the need for peaceful expression of opinions.
Referring to victims of past armed conflict, he said their pursuit of justice and compensation remains a shared responsibility, urging state institutions to fulfill their duties efficiently.
In the current fiscal year, the NHRC registered 58 complaints related to human rights violations.
The commission was established on May 26, 2000, and commemorates the date annually. This year’s theme was: “Right to Life, Dignity, Equality, and Freedom: Foundation for Sustainable Peace and Prosperity.”
