Resignation alone won’t solve visit visa scandal: Minendra Rijal

KATHMANDU: Former Communication Minister Dr. Minendra Rijal stated that Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak’s resignation alone is not the solution to the ongoing visit visa controversy.

Speaking at Nepal Press Union’s 34th anniversary event on Tuesday, Rijal said the need to trace the root of the malpractice, not just demand a resignation.

He criticized the trend of focusing on resignation rather than addressing systemic governance issues.

“This is not a one-time case—similar practices have existed before,” he said, highlighting the need to uncover who initiated and perpetuated the irregularities in the visa process.

Rijal clarified he was not defending the Home Minister but stressed that addressing only symptoms, like forcing resignations, is an inadequate approach.

He warned of a criminal culture where resignations are seen as sufficient accountability and added that media must play a role in uncovering the truth.

Rijal also called for better regulation of social media in Nepal. Citing data that 80% of Americans rely on social platforms for news, he said Nepal faces similar issues.

He noted that social media now often overrides traditional journalism, necessitating proper oversight.

On climate change, Rijal warned that Nepal is among the most vulnerable countries. He urged for greater public awareness and action at all levels, recalling past initiatives like a government meeting at Everest Base Camp.

He stressed internal commitment and preparedness for extreme monsoon events rather than symbolic gestures like Himalayan summits alone.
