KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has reiterated his party’s unwavering commitment to providing justice to the victims of the decade-long conflict in Nepal.
Speaking at the National Conference on Transitional Justice, organized by the Accountability Monitoring Committee and conflict victim organizations on Thursday, Deuba said there is no difference of opinion regarding the need to uncover the truth behind human rights violations committed during the conflict.
Deuba assured that the Nepali Congress has been dedicated from the outset to ensuring justice by investigating the human rights violations through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission for the Investigation of Enforced Disappearances.
The former Prime Minister also acknowledged the current government’s efforts in advancing the peace agreement’s unfinished tasks. He noted that the government has recently formed a recommendation committee for the appointment of office bearers to the transitional justice commissions, which are expected to be finalized soon.
Deuba assured that these commissions would be crucial in uncovering the truth about human rights violations during the armed conflict and in providing justice to the victims, in line with the spirit of the peace agreement.
“The truth will be established through discussions and interactions with the stakeholders. I want to assure you all on this matter,” he said.
The Nepali Congress president also expressed confidence that the concerns and interests of the conflict victims and the human rights community would be fully addressed as the work of these commissions progresses.
