KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has reiterated his commitment to providing full government support to ensure the success of Nepal’s transitional justice process.
Speaking at the National Conference on Transitional Justice, organized by the Accountability Monitoring Committee and conflict victim organizations, Prime Minister Oli highlighted the need to review the failures of the two transitional justice commissions’ past efforts. He called for all necessary actions to ensure the success of the upcoming phases of the process.
PM Oli assured the victims that the government would remain active in providing justice and reparations, ensuring that the violence of the past will not be repeated.
He also reminded the attendees that the law for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons was passed with consensus in parliament, aiming to bring closure to the peace process.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by the commissions due to the lack of consensus in the recommendation committee responsible for appointing officials. However, he assured that the government has formed a new recommendation committee in consultation with major political parties to move the process forward.
“The people of Nepal want to forget the wounds of the conflict. We have moved past violence, and we must ensure that such events never happen again,” said Prime Minister Oli. “It is a shame that the peace process has been delayed for 18 years. We must now be serious about completing the work. Action will be taken against those responsible for serious human rights violations.”
Prime Minister Oli also stated that it is unnecessary to celebrate the People’s War or commemorate it with a public holiday, as such actions may cause further distress to the victims.
At the event, attended by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Oli also appealed for continued international support in completing the transitional justice process, highlighting Nepal’s efforts to find a solution in a manner unique to its context.
He further stressed that the establishment of a federal democratic republic is irreversible, and the country cannot revert to the past.
