Clash between two factions of Nepal Students’ Union : Student Leaders with axes and swords in Morang Campus

BIRATNAGAR: A violent clash erupted between two factions of the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU), affiliated with the Nepali Congress, at the Mahendra Morang Campus in Biratnagar, the capital of Koshi Province.

The confrontation occurred between the supporters of Sher Bahadur Deuba’s faction and Dr. Shekhar Koirala’s faction, resulting in two student leaders being injured.

During the clash, Saroj Pokharel, the president of NSU Morang, was injured. On Thursday, Pokharel, along with activist Ayush Dahal and others, had arrived at the campus to form a unit of the student organization.

However, another group led by NSU leader and campus student union president Jaswant Paudel attacked them. Paudel claimed that they had not given approval for the formation of the campus unit committee and, with the help of his supporters, armed themselves with domestic weapons such as sticks, batons, and swords, launching the attack.

Paudel, the campus student union president, belongs to the Deuba faction, while Pokharel is aligned with the Koirala faction.

The conflict escalated, and during the altercation, both Pokharel and Ayush Dahal were injured. They are currently receiving treatment at Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar.

According to NSU activists and eyewitnesses, Jaswant Paudel, student union secretary Elish Thakuri, member Prashant Yadav, and others were involved in the attack on Pokharel and Dahal.

The police have begun an investigation after receiving information about the incident. Narayan Chimariya, the chief of the Morang police, stated that information is being gathered regarding the injured in the incident.
