Nepal seeks support for UN Human Rights Council membership

GENEVA: Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana has called on the international community to support Nepal’s bid for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the term 2027-2029.

Addressing the 58th High-Level Session of the UNHRC in Geneva, Rana urged ambassadors and representatives of various countries to recognize Nepal’s commitment to human rights, democracy, and peace despite its limited resources.

Speaking at a reception organized by the Nepali Permanent Mission in Geneva on Wednesday evening, she highlighted Nepal’s achievements in protecting and promoting human rights. The event was attended by over 100 heads of permanent missions, ambassadors, and representatives from international organizations.

“The Government of Nepal is steadfast in its commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights. With this commitment, Nepal has submitted its candidacy for membership of this Council for the coming years from 2027 to 2029. I urge all member states of the United Nations to support Nepal,” she said.

She also showcased Nepal’s progress in transitional justice, citing ongoing efforts to complete the peace process through newly formulated laws.

Additionally, she highlighted achievements in children’s rights, women’s rights, and minority inclusion, reaffirming Nepal’s commitment to the independence of the National Human Rights Commission.

Rana had earlier addressed the high-level session of the UNHRC on Tuesday, where she reiterated Nepal’s dedication to human rights. She arrived in Geneva last Saturday, leading a six-member Nepali delegation, and is scheduled to return to Nepal on Friday.
