KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, says the national identity card is a crucial step toward achieving good governance in Nepal.

Speaking after receiving his national identity card from Chief District Officer Bharatmani Pandey at the District Administration Office in Kaski, Minister Gurung described the card as a “Super Citizenship Card,” owing to its integration with modern biometric technology.

“The national identity card is a high-tech, secure, and reliable document. It is essential for social security allowances and will serve as the foundation for banking transactions, passports, and goods movement. This step is integral to curbing irregularities seen with traditional citizenship cards,” said Gurung, who also serves as the government’s spokesperson.

Minister Gurung noted that the national identity card’s biometric system ensures it cannot be stolen or misused. He added that it plays a pivotal role in promoting transparency and efficiency in governance.

Chief District Officer Pandey reported that the district has received 27,716 national identity cards to date, while 57,718 individuals have been issued cards through local ward offices.

He also mentioned that applications for the cards are being processed at the administration office.

The government has recently made the national identity card mandatory for receiving social security allowances under an ordinance, marking it as a vital instrument for modernizing administrative practices in Nepal.
