Four Tribhuvan University Professors charged over fake PhD used to secure Exam Controller job

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against Tribhuvan University Associate Professor Dilliram Prasai and three others, accusing them of using a fake PhD certificate to secure a government position.

According to the CIAA, Prasai claimed to have completed his PhD despite his dissertation being under revision, allowing him to gain eight academic points needed for the job. Based on those points, he was appointed as Assistant Examination Controller at the Regional Examination Control Office in Biratnagar on December 3, 2024.

Investigators found that Prasai used the title “Dr.” in his CV, certificates, and seminar documents, and submitted falsified documents with the intent of securing the post.

The CIAA has also charged the selection committee chairperson, Prof. Dr. Jayalakshmi Pradhan, and members Prof. Dr. Motilal Sharma and Prof. Dr. Meghraj Pokhrel for colluding with Prasai and influencing the recruitment process. The committee allegedly awarded him PhD points without verifying official documents and recommended his appointment using incorrect reporting.

The case has been filed under several sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, with the CIAA demanding imprisonment and fines. CIAA spokesperson Rajendra Paudel said Prasai should face the same level of punishment as the principal offender.
