Congress leaders push for special General Convention, reject ‘insult’ to signatures

KATHMANDU: Leaders within the Nepali Congress who are demanding a Special General Convention say the party must move toward internal elections with renewed policies and leadership.

Speaking at a gathering in Kathmandu on Wednesday, they stressed the need to correct past weaknesses, amend the party statute, and take the party forward with a more unified approach.

Leader Guru Ghimire urged the leadership not to undermine the signatures submitted in demand for the Special General Convention.

He said the party should hold the event by second week of December or third week of December to allow for new leadership and direction. He also accused the Central Working Committee of intentionally delaying meetings to avoid scheduling the convention.

Ghimire stated that party president Sher Bahadur Deuba should facilitate the process and could later be honored as a senior leader following the convention’s completion. He said the demand is aimed at strengthening the party’s unity.

Other leaders stressed that the upcoming Central Committee meeting must decide in favor of the convention and warned that any disrespect toward those who signed the petition would be unacceptable.

Gandaki Province President Shukra Raj Sharma claimed that if given responsibility, he could complete all necessary preparations and conduct the convention within one month. He said any elected leadership must resolve current problems and restore public trust in the party.
