NC faction calling Special General Convention to hold pressure assembly today

KATHMANDU: The faction inside the Nepali Congress demanding a Special General Convention is holding a special assembly today, aiming to intensify pressure on the Central Working Committee to fix a date for the convention. The gathering is scheduled for 1 PM at the Rashtriya Sabha Griha in Pradarshani Marg.

Leaders leading the campaign say the assembly will demonstrate the strength of their demand, backed by 54 percent of General Convention representatives who have already signed a petition calling for the special convention. The party’s Central Working Committee is meeting tomorrow to decide on the timeline for the 15th General Convention, a matter that has sharply divided the leadership.

The dispute emerged during the ongoing Central Committee meeting, where General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Biswa Prakash Sharma have insisted that the regular General Convention must be held before the March 5, 2026, parliamentary election, or, if not possible, a Special General Convention should be convened. Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s camp, however, maintains that holding any convention before the election is impractical.

Supporters of the Special General Convention submitted a memorandum with signatures from 54 percent of GC representatives on October 15, formally requesting the leadership to set a date.

Today’s assembly is being organized under the leadership of Gururaj Ghimire, though both General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma are not expected to attend. The event will be addressed by senior leaders including Narahari Acharya, Mahesh Acharya, Taranath Ranabhat, and Baldev Sharma Majgaiya.

Ahead of the gathering, the faction held separate consultations on Tuesday with Kathmandu Valley leaders, district and regional presidents from Bagmati Province, and representatives of party sister organizations.
