Differently-abled people trek to Annapurna Base Camp

MYAGDI: A group of differently-abled people successfully trekked to Annapurna Base Camp in Myagdi, highlighting the importance of disability-friendly tourism infrastructure.

The trek was organized by the Disabled Network Annapurna Rural Municipality. Nine participants with six types of disabilities began their journey from Humkhola in Narchyang on 22 October and completed it today, according to the network’s secretary, Bishal BK.

Participants included Chomu Sherpa Khushi, Ishwor Bastola, Rajesh Bhandari, Serebal Palasi, Sangita Sharma, Bishal BK, Bhim Gurung, and Basu Thakali, with Bandana Rai serving as their assistant.

“The trek was conducted to promote the message that disability-friendly policies, inclusive infrastructure, and accessibility in the tourism sector are necessary,” said BK.

“The journey to the base camp was very exciting. Our friends reached the base camp successfully. While some trekking routes and hotels were not fully disability-friendly, the trek showed that people with disabilities can also reach the base camp.”

The group trekked 22 kilometers along the Maurice Herzog route to the base camp and returned safely. This trekking route, known for its scenic beauty, offers views of the Mistrikhola River, tall waterfalls, towering mountains, rare flora, and diverse wildlife.

In recent years, improvements in infrastructure, accommodation, and promotional programs have attracted a growing number of tourists to Annapurna Base Camp during the autumn season.
