Probe commission seeks damage details from Gen-Z protests

KATHMANDU: The inquiry commission formed under former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki to investigate the September 8 and 9 protests has called for detailed reports of damages caused during the incidents.

At its first meeting held on Thursday after establishing an office at the Department of Climate and Research in Babarmahal, the commission decided to collect damage details from the Supreme Court, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), and other government offices through the Ministry of Home Affairs.

It has also invited submissions regarding damages to private sector property, industries, and personal assets, either directly at the commission’s office or via email at [email protected].

“On our first working day, we have decided to request damage details. Seven staff members have been assigned to the commission,” Chair Karki said. “We lack experts in areas like ballistics, forensic study, and legal support, so we will request the government to assign prosecutors and police officers. We aim to complete our work within the three-month mandate.”

The commission has requested that individuals and institutions provide verified documents, audiovisual materials, or any other evidence related to the damages.

The Cabinet, on September 21, formed the three-member commission with Karki as chair, and former AIG Bigyan Raj Sharma and legal expert Bishweshwar Prasad Bhandari as members.

The Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9 resulted in 74 deaths, with assessments of property damage still underway.
