Energy Minister and EU Ambassador discuss hydropower and green energy cooperation

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising held a courtesy meeting with Veronique Lorenzo, Ambassador of the European Union to Nepal, at Singha Durbar on Friday.

During the meeting, Ambassador Lorenzo extended congratulations and best wishes for Ghising’s successful tenure. Discussions focused on Nepal’s energy priorities, including reservoir-based hydropower projects of strategic importance, green energy development, energy security and efficiency, and further EU assistance in the sector.

Minister Ghising noted that despite the new government’s immediate priorities being elections, good governance, and reconstruction of infrastructure damaged during the recent Gen-Z protests, policy and legal reforms, inter-ministerial coordination, and expanding electricity markets remain crucial to moving development projects forward.

Expressing gratitude for the EU’s long-standing support, Ghising highlighted the 670 MW Dudhkoshi reservoir-based hydropower project as a top priority. He urged the EU to assist in mobilizing financing for the project, as well as in strengthening transmission and distribution systems.

Ambassador Lorenzo reaffirmed the EU’s readiness to enhance cooperation and support Nepal’s energy sector.
