Over 8,000 escaped prisoners return; over 6,000 still at large

KATHMANDU: Out of 14,549 prisoners who escaped from 28 jails and nine reformatories across the country, 8,054 have returned, according to the Department of Prison Management.

Among those who have returned, 7,713 escaped from prisons and 341 from reformatories. Director Chomindra Neupane stated that while some prisoners returned voluntarily, others were apprehended and brought back by security forces.

As of now, 6,494 prisoners remain at large—5,872 from prisons and 622 from reformatories. Authorities confirm that search operations are ongoing.

The mass escape occurred during the Gen-Z movement on September 9, when 13,585 prisoners fled from prisons and 964 from reformatories. Ten prisoners have since been reported dead. Currently, there are 23,446 inmates in custody out of a total of 30,646.
