Cholera in Birgunj: Infection confirmed in eight out of 10 samples

BIRGUNJ: Cholera infection has been confirmed in eight out of 10 samples tested in Birgunj, health officials said.

Dr. Ranjan Raj Bhatta, Director of the National Public Health Laboratory, stated that stool samples from patients showing cholera symptoms were collected in Birgunj and sent to the national lab for further testing. “Using ‘Bhitech’ technology, we found cholera bacteria in eight out of 10 cultured samples,” he said.

Dr. Bhatta added that although the local hospital in Birgunj had already detected cholera using rapid diagnostic tests (RDT), the samples were tested again for confirmation.

“Since RDT results can sometimes vary, we conducted lab cultures to verify the findings,” he explained.
