KMC destroys 31 litres of substandard oil in Basantapur

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) on Monday conducted a joint food inspection in Basantapur and Indra Chowk areas under wards 23 and 24, seizing and destroying substandard cooking oil from local eateries.

The monitoring was carried out by KMC’s Agriculture and Livestock Department in coordination with the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control using a mobile laboratory van. The inspection team visited four restaurants and one sweet shop.

Tests conducted with a Total Polar Material (TPM) device revealed that two of the restaurants were using frying oil that failed to meet standards. In the presence of the owners, 31 litres of inedible oil, 22 litres from one restaurant and 9 litres from another, were destroyed on the spot.

Meanwhile, samples collected from the sweet shop were found to comply with quality standards.

Officials instructed business operators to maintain food hygiene, avoid repeated use of frying oil, ensure separate storage for vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, and use aprons, hairnets, and masks during food preparation. They also reminded them to operate within legal provisions.

KMC said consumer health and food safety remain top priorities and pledged to continue such inspections regularly, while urging all food businesses to take responsibility for maintaining hygiene and quality.
