KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala on Tuesday called on the government to immediately address the demands of protesting sugarcane farmers.
In a social media post, Koirala criticized the government for ignoring farmers’ plight while only paying lip service to agriculture.
“Is it enough to just write in books and deliver speeches that agriculture is a priority?” he questioned. “It is deeply tragic that farmers are forced to come to the streets with sugarcane stalks. Their demands must be fulfilled without delay.”
Highlighting broader agricultural issues, Koirala said farmers continue to face chronic shortages of fertilizers during critical seasons, are forced to queue for supplies, and often resort to dumping milk in the streets due to mismanagement.
He also noted the recurring problems of delayed sugarcane payments and subsidy cuts, warning that such policies prevent Nepal from achieving self-sufficiency in food production.
