Tribhuvan Park in Thankot being transformed into a more attractive destination

KATHMANDU: Chandragiri Municipality has given high priority to enhancing the appeal of Tribhuvan Park in Thankot and is actively undertaking various development works to that end.

The municipality is accelerating the reconstruction, renovation, maintenance, and new construction of infrastructure within the park—an area of historical and cultural significance and a popular domestic tourist destination.

Chandragiri Municipality Mayor Ghanashyam Giri stated that the project is being carried out with a supplementary municipal grant exceeding Rs. 30 million.

Current upgrades include the renovation of the forest picnic area, children’s park, landscaped gardens, historical structures such as stone streams, ponds, and resting platforms (pati).

New and attractive animal statues—including cows, elephants, rhinos, and various birds—have also been installed in the heart of the park. Additional recreational equipment has been placed for children. On public holidays, the park draws large crowds of visitors coming to walk, relax, socialize, and picnic.

Mayor Giri said, “The municipality is rapidly advancing the reconstruction, renovation, maintenance, and new construction of the entire infrastructure of the historic Tribhuvan Park. In this first phase, we have allocated over Rs. 30 million, and an additional Rs. 30 million has been secured for further enhancements. This initiative will help preserve and promote the park.”

He further noted that the municipality is committed to preserving the city’s historical heritage, religious sites, festivals, and traditional rituals. As the federal and provincial governments have shown limited interest in preserving Tribhuvan Park, the municipality has taken the lead, prioritizing the park and allocating sufficient budget for its upkeep and development.

During a recent site inspection, Mayor Giri directed the responsible teams to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe. “This project is not only tied to the reputation of the municipality but also to my own. I urge everyone involved to ensure quality work is completed on time. This is how a model park should be built,” he remarked.

Tribhuvan Park holds historical significance dating back to 2024 BS, when the Tribhuvan Memorial Committee was established at the request of the late King Tribhuvan.
