Drinking water crisis hits Tanahun

TANAHUN: Residents of Vyas Municipality Wards 2 and 3 in Tanahun district are facing an acute drinking water shortage after taps in the area ran dry.

The crisis began after the Damauli Drinking Water and Sanitation Consumers’ Committee, based in Vyas-4, halted water distribution through its regular supply system.

Locals have been forced to queue for hours at alternative sources such as the Prem Kuwa, Pani Ghatta, and Panchamandir taps in Amarpuri, often waiting long hours just to fill a single jar of water.

Dev Gajmer, a resident of Deuralinagar in Vyas-3, said people have started lining up at public wells and taps from early morning due to the lack of water at home. The situation worsened on Tuesday evening, with large crowds forming late into the night in search of water.

According to Buddhiman Shrestha, chairperson of the Damauli Drinking Water and Sanitation Consumers’ Committee, the issue arose due to the ongoing road expansion project along the Muglin–Pokhara section. He said temporary pipelines had to be removed to make way for permanent water supply infrastructure, which disrupted water distribution in the area.

Authorities have yet to announce when normal water supply will resume, leaving residents to rely on scarce alternative sources in the meantime.
