KATHMANDU: The Nepal Student Union (NSU) has submitted a 25-point memorandum to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, demanding that a minimum of 20 percent of the total annual budget be allocated to the education sector.
During a meeting at Singha Durbar on Monday, NSU President Durjang Sherpa informed reporters that a key demand in their letter is for at least 20 percent of the national budget to be compulsorily allocated to public education starting from the current fiscal year.
The NSU also urged the government to ensure the effective implementation of a student-friendly school education act from this fiscal year, with necessary budget allocations.
Sherpa further highlighted other critical issues brought to the Finance Minister’s attention, including the need for policies to control inflation and provide subsidies on essential goods directly impacting students’ daily lives.
Additionally, the NSU pressed the government to create domestic employment opportunities by formulating policies on mandatory technical training for youth up to 40 years of age, aiming to reduce the reliance on foreign employment.
