Three glacial lakes found in Humla’s Kanji Himal during avalanche investigation

HUMLA: A team of experts dispatched to study the recent avalanche in Til village of Namkha Rural Municipality-6, Limi, has discovered three glacial lakes in the Kanji Himal region.

The glacial lakes were found at an elevation of 5,350 meters during an on-site field study.

According to Senior Divisional Geologist Shiv Kumar Baskota of the Department of Mines and Geology, earlier assessments had identified two lakes, but the latest field visit confirmed the presence of a third.

The expert team was sent to investigate the suspected glacial lake outburst that triggered an avalanche on May 15, which displaced 32 families from 18 households in Til village.

The three-member team, comprising Sushil Kumar Shrestha from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Shiv Prasad Baskota from the Department of Mines and Geology, and hydrologist engineer Sauhard Joshi, reached the affected area on Sunday. They were accompanied by two local guides, making a total of five members, according to ward chair Paljor Tamang.

The team hiked up to the suspected origin point of the avalanche to examine any signs of a glacial lake outburst and assess the risk of further disasters.

The field investigation is part of a broader effort to better understand and mitigate climate-induced disasters in high-mountain regions of Nepal, particularly in remote and vulnerable communities like Limi. Findings from the study will help inform future disaster preparedness and response measures.
