KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress central member Kalyan Gurung has countered remarks made by party General Secretary Gagan Thapa, asserting that the party will contest upcoming elections under the signature of current party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.
On Monday, Thapa had stated the Nepali Congress would participate in the elections only after obtaining the signature of a new party president. This statement came after the party decided to allocate tickets for the upcoming polls under Deuba’s authorization, prompting Thapa’s opposition.
In response, Gurung clarified that there is no possibility of confusion regarding a special general convention before the elections. He said that currently, no official proposal regarding a special or regular general convention has been submitted to the central working committee.
Gurung further explained that party rules do not allow a special general convention to remove the party president, officers, or members. A special central convention can only be called if the incumbent president resigns and the resignation is accepted, while a no-confidence motion is required to remove any office-bearer. Signatures required for any procedural action have yet to be verified and certified, and the rules governing such processes have not been finalized.
He said that the party will participate in the House of Representatives and National Assembly elections scheduled for March 5, 2026, under the signature of President Deuba. Gurung urged party members to maintain unity and avoid confusion, stating that there will be no special general convention before the polls.
“The party must remain united and contest the elections with confidence under the current president’s signature. There is no room for division,” Gurung added.
