KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress central member and head of the party’s Education Department, Nain Singh Maher, has urged the government and all political stakeholders to faithfully implement the agreement reached during the country’s emergency period.
Speaking at a meeting organized by the Nepali Congress Municipal Committee, Parshuram, Maher said the agreement focused on holding the House of Representatives election on March 5, 2026 and emphasized that the government must act actively and honestly to ensure its implementation.
“The intention of the movement leaders, political party leaders, and domestic and foreign diplomatic friends at that time was to hold elections on the 21st to provide a way out for the country. Since the government does not yet have a popular mandate, its main responsibility is to conduct the election. The government should not be distracted from this task,” he said.
Mahar criticized the government for appearing more focused on disruption than election preparation. He urged authorities to engage political parties, rebuild trust with security personnel, and restore public confidence to conduct a free and fair poll.
“The government must ensure that citizens can reach polling stations peacefully and that the environment allows all parties to participate. Our demand is for a timely and peaceful election,” he added.
Mahar also warned against government actions outside its mandate, such as unnecessary administrative transfers, urging officials not to waste time on irrelevant activities. He stressed that the Congress party will push for election preparations during its central committee meeting starting October 30.
He further stated that the restoration of parliament is only possible if no alternative remains and highlighted the need for legislative measures to remove constitutional obstructions.
